In light of my own discoveries about the relationship between doctors and the pharmaceutical ind. I would rarely consult a doctor and then only to get a diagnos and a second opinion - I would never take their drugs and avoid surgery - in most cases

I my research I discovered that most commonly prescribed drugs do more harm than good - they cause complications that precipitate more serious health conditions later on - possibly requiring major surgery or causing premature ageing and death

Also many surgical operations are unnecessary

This perpetuate a health care system that is focused on treating symptoms rather that curing the illness

I also discovered this gem: "A patient cured is a customer lost."

My own solution is to take responsibility for my health - see www.curezone .org

Napoleon is supposed to have said that on Judgement Day, doctors would have more lives to answer for than generals. I have no doubt that in many cases ,conventional medicine has done more harm than good - especially in the widespread over-reliance on pharmaceutical poisons which control some symptoms, while causing others, often worse than the original ones. The medics seem to me to be at their best when dealing with acute emergencies, and at their worst when dealing with chronic illness.

As far as possible donot go in for drugs. Most of the minor ailments automatically get cured due to body immunity.I agree that the doctor-pharmaceutical company nexus has resulted in prescription of unwanted drugs to boost sales and to earn commission. The best system is to have a good family doctor
who keeps your health records. He should be reliable. He who gives least medicine is the best doctor.Always get a second opinion.Never go to a surgeon /specialist directly.Only on a recommendation of your family doctor/GP go to others. You are fully responsible for your health.
In some countries ,there is a system of precription audit. The prescription and medicine bills(or copies) are kept at the medical store. The independant Prescription Audit Team containing doctors etc, constituted by National/Govt Health Services audit them and incase unwanted medicines/overdose is prescribed by some body, puntive action is taken against the doctor.Cancellation of Registration or Fine is imposed. This may prevent drug abuse.
Second line is Over The Counter Medicine containing harmless medicines may be found out through research and made available which will help the general public.

I agree that people shouldn't rely on drugs when they are not necessary. I also think that people would require less medical attention if they took better care of themselves.

BUT you are making a blanket statement and a dangerous one at that. There are some illnesses that do require medication or you will eventually die or your body will become so damaged you hardly have any quality of life.
There are certain mental illnesses that, without medication, the person becomes a danger to themselves and/or others and even if they don't become dangerous they are tortured by voices, paranoia and anxiety. Believe me, I have worked on a secure mental health ward for some years and I have met patients before and after they've tried medication and most of them would agree with me in saying that while it does not cure their illness, it controls it enough so that they can lead a nearly normal life.
I also have family members who would not be here today if it weren't for life saving medication and operations.
There are some things that can't be cured by a trip to your nearest alternative medicine shop, even most practioners of alternative medicine would agree with that.

If your wish to experiment with your own life then please go ahead, but I feel it is irresponsible to try and promote the idea of abandoning conventional medicine completely. After all, how would you feel if you convinced someone you loved to not go to a doctor to check out that lump and they then died of a cancer that could have been caught early and stopped. Think about it please!

PS. I know you won't give me ten points for this but I feel it is importent to show the other side to this arguement.

Additional: I agree with fatface, pharmaceutical companies should share the wealth, but they would have to be forced by the government as I can't see them putting their hand in their pockets otherwise! I'm a girl by the way ;>)

Responsibility Definitely.

Prevention is many times better than cure and many times cheaper too.

Our bodies are designed to repair themselves, what we need to do is help them, by eating right, drinking enough water, and sleeping enough; it's that simple.

The problem is that most of the foodstuffs we eat are processed and thus with less nutrients, full of chemicals or pesticides, or designed for strength and beauty rather than nutrition.

Furthermore our lifestyles make us work long hours, and catch whatever food is convenient.

I personally prefer to buy my food fresh (preferably from a supermarket which relies on volume - hence freshness- or a market when I know the people) everyday that I cook, and I try to cook at least three times a week.

Also there are tried and tested things that promote health such as tai-chi and yoga. These are systems honed over centuries that keep our bodies in good shape.

I personally do yoga.

My aim is to stay out of the 'western medical cycle/circus' as much as I can. Even when I hurt my muscles, I prefer to go to a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner.

The body needs to be respected as a whole and it will take care of itself.

Beginning to have similar thoughts. Think my Type 2 diabetes which was diagnosed 18 months ago might have been caused by the drugs I was on for high blood pressure. Also believe that doctors (GPs) are in the hands of the pharmaceutical industry.

before you go saying that all this is true, you go to school for four years, then go to medical school for four more years, then spend three to seven years in residency and THEN come back and tell me you have validity to your claim (and go hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt in the process). Spend at least ten and up to close to twenty years just in training, and then maybe i'll believe your indictment of physicians. We go to school to HELP YOU, and if you don't want our help fine, but don't spew this crap around calling it fact.
Please...
don't believe this garbage, it's completely unsubstantiated. Responsible people see their doctors, and if through there own research they have questions or are not sure on a particular course of treatment, they ask their doctors about it. If that's not good enough, they get a second opinion. Trying alternative therapies and the like is FINE, if you work it out with your doctor to make sure nothing your doing is interfering with any medication or current treatment you're on, and as long as it's never done IN PLACE of scientifically proven medicine.

Here's another shocking, and possibly upsetting concept: If pharmeceutical companies don't make money, they go out of business, then they can't make drugs. And if they can't make drugs? People can't get treatment, and many would die. Yes, pharm companies (like ANY company) want profits. Yes, prescription drugs are too expensive in this country. Yes, some medicines are over prescribed, but this is not an indictment of the system.
We're not in this business to rob you, or hurt you. I'm sorry you're so skeptical of modern medicine, but frankly it's a double standard you've presented, and ignorant to present it simply as fact.

Your webside does not open. Anyway, the drugs are only means not the end themselves. If you could, you can definately search for alternative. Previously, I used medicine whatever the case but now a days i realized it has more side effect than cure. That's why we can search for many alternatives like yoga, herbs, and water therapy rather than using drugs.

I think your statements are a bit extreme although they do have some foundation. Doctors in general do their best. Pretty Tough is right in what he/she says about mental illness and other conditions. Do you think that the pharmaceutical industry should be legally obliged to put some of their obscene profits into promoting 'wellness' ?
