Set x to the answer
then 2 + 2 = x
so
x^2 = (2 + 2)^2 = 2^2 + 2*2*2 + 2^2 = 4 + 8 + 4 = 16
so we now have
x^2 = 16
subtracting 16 from each side gives us
x^2 - 16 = 0
which can be rewritten
x^2 + 0*x - 16 = 0
Using the quadratic formula, we have
x = [-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4*a*c)] / 2*a
in this case, a = 1, b = 0, and c = -16, so
x = [-0 + sqrt(0^2 - 4*1*-16)] / (2*1)
= [sqrt(0^2 - 4*1*-16)] / (2*1)
= [sqrt(- 4*1*-16)] / (2*1)
= [sqrt(-4*-16)] / (2*1)
= [sqrt(64)] / (2*1)
=8/(2*1)
=8/2
=4
So, there we have it, 2+2 = 4
