The locks and dams consists of a series of 29 locks and dams on the Mississippi River above St. Louis, Mo., insuring a 9-foot channel for barge traffic as far upstream as St. Paul, Minn. The bulk of the system was built in the 1930s.

on the actual river..27..all north of st. louis mo.......there are other offshoots (canals) once you get down to new orleans where you go into the intercoastal waterway
