The Union, and the Confederacy (North and South), fought the Civil War over states' rights, specifically the right of a state to nullify an act that they deemed unconstitutional. This right, in fact, had been given to the supreme court over the states (judicial review), but it was still in question, and the Civil War provided the resolution. Also notable is the fact that the confederacy seceded, and the union wanted to win it back because they were afraid that the European powers would interfere, as they had considerable stakes in southern trade goods. This southern hope, however, was mostly in vain, as other markets, such as India, were opening up at around this time due to imperialism.
The idea that the war was fought over slavery is largely a myth. It was a bit of propaganda used in the middle of the war in order to rally those in the north behind a moral cause. Even the freedom of the slave was misleading, because it only freed slaves in the border states that the north hoped would join the army.
Lastly, the war was fought over industrialization, as the government was (wisely) catering more to the needs of the growing, industrial north, than the agriccultural south. The irony is that, by the end of the war, the south was forced to begin industrialization anyway in order to keep up with the north.
Sorry, I know that answer was disorganized, and not completely thorough, but in order to understand all of this, you really ought to study American history in school, or if you can't, then pick up some historical literature (non-fiction), and stay AWAY from the books that market slavery as the most important issue.

Who fought? That's easy; The United States of America versus The Confederate States of America. A lot of gorillas were involved also. Why? That can be debated like our current war. My conclusion is this; The new anti-slavery political party called the Republicans nominates Abraham Lincoln to run for President. The southern states freak out. I mean litterly. The economy of the south is run on slaves and Cotton. Sorry, That's the way it was back then. Only 2% of the free population of the south owned slaves. The other 98% believed that it was in their right. Well Lincoln gets elected(no where near the majority either) and this is where the south freaks. They believe Lincoln is going to take away their heritage. So South Carolina legally with- drawls from the country. Soon other states follow and they form their own country; The C.S.A. Not all slave states succeeded. Missouri, Kentucky,Maryland stayed in the Union. Virgina broke up and West Virgina went slave free. Washington D.C. stayed of course with their 2000+ slaves. Lincoln, although a Republican never wanted to free the slaves.(search Lincoln Douglas debates,Charleston Illinois.Read first 3 paragraphs might shock ya what Lincoln says)Lincoln thougt slavery was wrong and did not want it too expand into the new western states, such as Kansas. No way to ban slavery with the way Congress and the Senate was set up.With the country split into two Lincoln wanted to put back to gather. Lincoln had a problem, not to many people in the Union cared about what was going on down below The Mason Dixon Line. So he invented the draft. The war was started in Carolina when aid was trying to be reached to some isolated Union soldiers at a fort. The war was supposed too last between a week and a mounth. With the Confederates out numbered and hardly no ammintion in their pockets they put up a fight for over four, very very bloody years.

The north and the south of the US fought the civil war. The North had abolished slavery and the south did not agree with that. Also the south was trying to be a different country, The confederates. They even had their own money. I used to have a original $100.00 dollar confederate bill. I lost track of it when I found out it was worth about 25 cents.

I had 2 great great uncles who marched with Sherman in the Western army, one cavalry, one foot. Both were German immigrants who probably didn't speak English well at all. I don't think they fought for the black people of America personally, but probably did it for the concept of freedom in general. They were good Hessian boys who knew how to light a torch and burn stuff...and live of the loot they carried off as they went...both lived through it.
They certainly didn't have a life of luxury before the war and probably worked as hard as any slave to survive in this new place. Black people don't owe me anything for what my family did back then, because they did what they did to feel a belonging to this new place as well as stand up for principle (not to forget, the burning and looting part too). But it would be nice if I heard a small word by the black community at least recognizing men like these, common guys who left oppression for a new beginning and a chance to make it an even better place...can you imagine a poor person moving here and dying right away in somebody else's war...that would be sacrifice...but they probably were smart enough to be in the second row.

A whole bunch of US states fought each other because they disagreed how the federal government was supposed to work.
And a bunch of them didn't like what the others were doing, so they tried to leave.
