That's a toughie, because while Freddie was outstanding in so many ways, there are others who are outstanding in ways that he wasn't.
If you're limiting it strictly to singing, opera singers would have him beat on a technical level. They would be "better singers" than Freddie.
But when you combine his voice with Freddie's songwriting skill, his presence, and stage persona, you're hard pressed to find someone who's a better all-around performer.
I still miss Freddie.

Freddie was in a catagory all his own. Not too many singers have the vocal range Freddie had. Freddie was perfect for Queen. If I had to pick someone who has about the same range he had, I would pick David Bowie!

I am a big admirer of the legendary Freddy Mercury, and greatly miss his contribution to the music scene. Only one singer comes to mind that is in league with his charisma and vocal range, and that is Sam Cooke. Unfortunately, we lost both of these great men just as they were beginning to realize their full potential.

Yes he is great but there are so many better
such as Daryl Hall David Bowie Prince
and for the less mainstream Thurston Moore Nick Cave

to late nighter: yes the mars volta kick *** ( cedric bixler is the singer) and yes they are better than Queen... sure freddie was mad good at singing but the instrumentals in the mars voltas songs are simply ingenius and cedric may have an even larger vocal range... but to the chick who said country is better... WHAT?!
