The Cowboys. As much as I hate them -- they are they have the most fans across the country. The facts:
-The America's Team nickname is based on the large fan base
-Large ratings
-High jersey sales
I wish I could say another team, but you asked for the facts...

What do you mean facts? There's no possible way anyone could have concrete data on this, unless they went up to everyone in the country and asked them. Your best bet is to just look at the populations of the metropolitan areas for each team, and if there are two teams in one metro area, figure about half of the people will root for each team. But this still won't be all that accurate.

You think the Raiders are the most popular team in Cali? Are you kidding me? Cali is undisputedly Niner territory. Why do you think you can't even watch the Raiders home games? They're blacked out locally because your fans haven't had a sell out game in 5 years. Raiders fans are few and far between.
In the US the most popular team is probably the NY Giants because they're in a city of 8 million.
Internationally, the 49ers are the most popular.

Of the above list all are good franchises. However, the Steelers and Colts have long standing fan base that has been very supportive even in the "lean years". Not in the list but some to be considered would be Kansas City, and Green Bay. Ya just have to appreciate Brett
