A child who is hit will learn to hit. The bible says the "rod" which in biblical terms means a stick used to help GUIDE sheep. Not to hit. Recent studies have discovered that hitting a child to punish him or her teaches the child nothing. It only teaches a child fear of the hitter, lowers whatever respect the child had for his/her parent, and teaches the child that agression solves problems. I believe that children should be disciplined using other methods instead of spanking.

No, I do not. As the mother of 2 children, ages 9 and 3, I can tell you that I get the best results with positive reinforcement and behavior modification. That's not to say I've never tried spanking, but I believe that physical punishments are so violent and honestly are for the uneducated masses.
That's not to say I don't discipline, but I use rewards as incentive for good behavior and we talk through any bad behavior that recurs. It works.

Because of the risk of abuse, dear. The ones who grow up to abuse their parents (and this is born out in study after study) have been abused as children. This may not have been from their parents but it occurred nonetheless. If a child is over 9, spanking is not a good idea (nothing else is acceptable!) Take away privileges, allowance, TV, whatever. It will be more painful for the parent than the child, but the parent needs to stand tough. It's hard to come up with fitting punishments and not resort to violence. It's easy when you think of the alternative!

Yes, selective Bible reading has left a whole generation wondering what went wrong! Had their parents obeyed the advice in the Bible the vileness that's loose today would have been contained no doubt! Will another generation be raised up without real Bible Study and Obedience and Prayer? Prayer up, Pardner! Prayers go up (so that) blessings come down! Let's have Showers of Blessings! heh?!ls/05

To many bad apples ruined the bunch . I think kids need a good whiping if they are REALLY bad , but to many bad parents thought they needed beat until they were black and blue or even crippled . The problem is who is there to judge to say when they have been hit enough . Also there is no hard data supporting corperal punishment as a way to curb bad behavior .
Ohh and to the guy above me I do remember the bible says " Spare the rod spoil the child "

Are you for real? How many kids do you have? Any good parent knows that hitting a child is NOT necessary if they are brought up properly, with rules and boundaries that are taught and followed through with 100% of the time. I never had to hit my kids, still don't. But guess what? When I told them not to do something, and told them what the consequences would be, I dished out the consequences if they didn't do it. I hate when parents keep saying 'I'm not going to tell you again", when in fact the child knows that the parent is too lazy to do anything and that they can keep doing it. Poor parenting causes bad kids, and then they hit them. Great lessons for kids. You're teaching them that if you lose you temper it's OK to hit.

Sure, just smack the crap out of them. Just kidding, I recieved spankings, and they worked, but not any better than time outs. The Bible certainly does speak of discipline, but never a certain kind. Just realize that their is a thin line between abuse and discipline.

The bible doesn't say to hit them does it? It says to discipline, which can take any form...You dont know that they will hit their parents...Did you know recent Psychological studies have found that uneducated believe more in corporal punishment than in other methods of discipline..While educated people belive in other methods

Apparently spanking is child abuse, and telling them 'no' is mental abuse. The solution? Let them be brats. I don't think so.
"He who spares the rod hates his son" so true on many levels.
