Any cooking oil will do it, olive oil, sunflower, etc. You can use nail varnish remover, but be careful as it could take the colour off the shoe or damage any plastic.
In either case you only need a tiny bit on cotton wool or a tissue.

WD40 is the best thing to remove the sticky glue. I have used it heaps of time. If you already have a can try it before you go out and buy goo-gone. It will save you some money.

buy one of the "orange" cleaners that contain orange oils. It's great to have on hand for removing glue, gum, ink, tar, etc. It only takes a little on a paper towel and then wipe it on the sticky spot. The orange cleaner will dissolve the glue and the paper towel will soak it up.
After you wipe off the glue, clean the orange oil off with soap and water.

Rubbing gently with Avon SkinSoSoft will get sticky label residue off anything and hasn't hurt anything I've used it on yet.
