I have 4 kids and did it both ways twice. I definitely recommend the epidural. I was able to relax and dilated faster on the epidural than I did without it. I just read an article in Fitness magazine that said doctors have changed their opinions on epidurals. They used to believe that an epidural given too early would extend a woman's labor .... now they find that the epidural allows the woman to relax and labor effectively without the pain.
It isn't as scary as it looks when you're getting one, mainly because you can't see what's happening. Also the person administering the epidural will describe what he/she is doing, this made me feel in control because I knew what was going on. In addition, he/she will describe to you exactly what you will feel physically just before it happens. This also made me feel better because it helped me to trust that he was doing it properly, in my mind how else would he know what I was feeling at that precise moment if he wasn't doing it correctly?
You will experience labor naturally so don't feel that you took the easy way out ..... all it will take is a few really intense contractions for you to want that epidural ..... trust me on this, like I said 4 babies .... 2 with and 2 without epidurals ... I know what I'm talking about!!
Good luck!!

At the beginning of my pregnancy I wanted an epidural too. I did some reasearch and changed my mind halfway through my pregnancy. I ended up having an undrugged birth. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I was way more scared of the epidural than I was of the contractions. There are risks to taking any drug while giving birth and an epidural is no exception. Having an undrugged birth was a wonderful experience.
Not every mother feels the same way that I do. Mothers who are medically induced or that have back labor will experience more pain than mothers with a spontaneous labor.
There are some things that you can to do to have a better childbirth experience without drugs.
1. Hire a doula. (Professional labor assistant) She will be worth her weight in gold in assisting you during your labor.
2. Labor for awhile in warm water. You don't necessarily have to give birth in the water but laboring in water feels really good. They call it the "midwives epidural"
3. Take a good empowering childbirth class. Not simply one that tells you to be a good girl and to do what you're told. Hypnobirthing, Birthing from Within, and The Bradley method are great for this.
4. Find a Health care provider who respects your wishes. If they aren't willing to accomidate your wishes now they certainly won't respect them while you are in labor.
You need to make your own decision on this. Only you yourself can make that choice. There is no judge out there who will say that you did it wrong or right. The important thing is to make sure that you feel empowered about the choices that you make.
Good luck and happy birthing.

If this is your 1st child i would suggest u go for epidural. I had my 1st kid without epidural & the pain was unbearable, so much so that i had phobia when i was pregnant with my 2nd child. It was such a relieved.....and please don't forget to do the pelvic floor exercise, it really helps alot. My doctor was surprised that i was able to feel the contraction & push even though the nurse had forgotten to turn down the epidural, probably due to the pelvic floor exercise which i've been doing throughout the 9 months.
With or without epidural wouldn't affect the baby much, both my kids had an apgar score of 10/10 when they were born.
All the best to u!

I had an epidural. It made labour much easier. It did slow my contractions a little, but I was given medicine to correct it. The epidural was turned down so I could feel to push and deliver my son.
The epidural had no adverse effects on my baby. He was perfectly healthy and had Apgar scores of 9 and 10.
So, if you think you want an epidural, go ahead and do it. Childbirth is not a she-woman who can stand the most pain endurance contest. Do what feels right for you.
Good luck with your new baby.

I would pick natural cause its better for you and your baby. It really all depends if you have low pain tolerance or high pain tolerance. An Epidural isnt all that painful plus you feel relief in like 10 mins. I would suggest an Epidural if you have low to very low pain tolerance. It just really all depends on your body and trust your body. If it tells you to get an epidural then i would get an epidural or vice versa.
I hope this helped
Good luck!!

You'll know when you are there. Both my kids were delivered without drugs and not by choice- one was too laste for the epidural and the other one, the epidural was turned off because I couldn't push. Believe me- you'll know what you want when the time comes and not a minute sooner!
