It's more about water temp. Guppies are the bunny rabbits of fish, they will have LOTS of babies once they get going. Just feed them regular flake food, and bump up the water temp to get them in the mood (about 72-80deg F). Once the fry are born, you can feed them cooked egg yolks to help them grow quicker. And make sure you have at least 2 females foe each male, or the males will drive the females crazy and cause unwanted stress. See the links for more info.

We've been breeding guppies for the past 4 years, and have found that a good diet is essential. We feed livebearer flake food, tropical flake food, guppy food, blood worms (frozen & dried), and occasionally shrimp pellets.

Be sure to rotate your blood lines often, or else you will have deformed babies. Keep low plants and hiding areas so the babies will have a chance to live (and not become lunch for hungry parents).

Good luck! Guppies are the best fish to breed - they are practically no work for you ;)

Both beef heart and earthworms will extend the life of your guppies and double the amount of fry that they have. The guppies in my tank go nuts for the stuff and will eat it until it sticks out of their mouth.
Buy a beef heart at your grocery store and cut out all the tough pieces. Puree the stuff in a blender with a bit of water and freeze it in flat sheets in a Ziploc bag. Break off a small bit twice a week and thaw it out before tossing it in your tank.
As far as earthworms, I find it easier to buy earth worm flakes at the pet store.
