Why do I have such a problem with confrontation - - Often I would rather run away from an issue or miserably put up with it, hoping it will improve than face it head on and deal with it. Is it because I'm a pathetic coward? My emotional skin is so thin; how can I toughen up and grow some balls?

I wish I knew the why's of it. I had the same problem for a long time in my life. In my own experience, I found that after the first few times I handled something head on, it got easier to do. You have to get over the disease to please.
It is almost impossible to do all the time. Learn to say no without waffling or worrying about whether you are going to be liked or not. You can't please everyone, and the sooner you learn it, the easier your life will get.
Good luck
