During World War II, we used steel for pennies because we needed the copper for the war effort.
Unless in very good shape it is worth no more than a few cents.

I have a suggestion for you. Take a look and see what the year is one the penny. If the year is from the early 1940's, it is a war penny. The copper in the pennies at that time were neede for the war effort. I too found a penny like the one you have. I would take it to a coin dealer to find its worth ( it depends on the pennies condition.) If it's not worth anything, keep it as a conversation piece.

If it isn't an old WWII steel penny, then beware. Back in the 50s it was popular to rub the pennies with mercury to make them shinny like a dime. Of course that was before we knew how toxic mercury was. I understand that it can be absorbed through the skin. Happy washing.

Your penny is a 1943 coin made of iron. That year the us mint made pennies out of iron because they needed the copper to make bulllets during ww2. The coin is worth a few bucks, at most. I have about 10 of them....KECK

It's just a steel penny, not worth much yet. Now if you managed to find a 1943 COPPER penny, you'd have something valuable there!

It is a steel penny. They were produced during WWII because of copper shortages.
They are cool, but not worth much more than a penny.

We electroplated pennies in chemistry when I was in high school. If it is not a steel penny from WWII, then someone was having fun in science!
