The stereotype is that all people choosing the goth style of dress are satanic, evil people. Obviously, this isn't true, seeing as how many people (teens in particular) choose to dress 'goth' just b/c they like the way it looks, or want to try something different for a while. While I certainly would be leery of someone who was a satanist or something like that, I don't think it's fair to judge that just by what they wear.
On the other hand, I must admit to thinking the hard core goth dressers look a bit...silly. And since the connotation of dressing goth is that it makes people THINK you're into stuff that bad, I can't say I think it's a great thing. But for the most part, I think it can be a safe form of expression. The funny part is that from what I understand the term 'goth' and the goth style of dressing we're used to these days didn't have much to do with worshipping the devil.
Gothic was a term that used to be used to describe a type of architecture, you know, the ones with gargoyles and stuff!
Keep in mind though, that there certainly are people out there who's outer dark clothing and pale faces reflect what's going on inside them. Just as anyone's appearance is largely affected by what's going on inside them. Also, people who choose to dress in any extremist way, including goths, are wanting attention, so I'd never feel to bad about looking, and double looking. Their screaming for attention...just with their clothes instead of their voices.
I'm more worried about the other parts of the goth culture, than the clothes. The horrid music talking about death and killing and rape, and the underground clubs where these things happen.

There is a stereotype for them same as any other group or style. Sadly, the original goths in the 80's were not just dark in their attire and music, but their behavior. Music about death wasn't a thing parents wanted their kids to listen to. Dyeing their hair black, painting their nails black, and wearing nothing but black colors looked too much like death and suicidal tendencies.
By the time Marilyn Manson and the type came along, goth wasn't very wide spread outside of few places. Groups that were actually heavy metal were labeled goth because of their dark looks and lyrics. Even the most insane person can admit the lead singer, Marilyn himself (Brian Warner), isn't the best role model. The outlandish behavior and costumes gave a bad name to gothic culture in modern day. Many people had no idea what the style was about, they only saw these shocking celebrities plastered on the TV. The blacks and reds were not done in what mainstream considered stylish or fashionable. Instead, the people looked ready to be burried. The fixation on death was promoted to make people believe that these teens and young 20's were out worshiping the devil and sacrificing helpless animals.
The scholars were quick to point out to anyone that listened that the "goths" were originally a German tribe in the days of the Roman Empire. The word meant "barbarian" and "pagan" as time went by. To the people that thought that the new goths were taking a lesson from history past, pagan barbarians weren't what we wanted in society. I remember watching all this on TV. What a stink it was!

Are you sure that people are scared? I look at them the same way that I look at any other person seeking attention, with sympathy. If you go to all of the effort to stand out than you want to stand out.

Looking all black is sort of scary-looking, isn't it? They're choosing to look that way, and of course people will naturally react to it. I try to not judge by people's appearance, though.

They dress for attention and they get it. I know some and they are not mean, but they do want attention.
