As far as I'm concerned, the only thing holding you back is the debt. I need to lose a few pounds, but I'm not worried about that. I'm not the neatest person in the world, but I'm not worried about that either. My only debt is the mortgage on my house. I don't carry any other debt, and I feel this is a large part of most people's stress level. Pay down your debt as quickly as possible. Especially with a recession coming soon due to the housing bubble and high energy costs. Change the things you can, and accept the things you can't.

Well you just described half of the people in the world. I too am messy, in debt & who couldn't stand to lose a few pounds.
My suggestion is to tackle one problem at a time.
1. The mess. Are you messy because you really hate cleaning or are do you just feel lazy most of the time?
If you just can't stand to clean get a maid service. A lot of small cleaning companies have inexpensive services. Have them come once a week and you can keep you place nice without all the nasty housework.
Or if you would like to do your own cleaning but you can never seem to get around to it. Do something to motivate yourself. Like plan a dinner party or have a friend come in from out of town to stay with you. This will motivate you toclean your house and once it's done all you have to do is work on keeping it that way.
2. In debt- Take a serious honestl look at what you spend every month verses what you currently make. Then assses your debt. old debt/ new debt & current bills (Get a free credit report) You might decide to consolidate your debt's. This will give you lower monthly payments.
Depending on the amount of debt is bankruptcy an option? Or you could take a second job and use the income exclusively to pay off your bills.
3. Losing a few pounds.- Get active. Get a physical hobby that will get you up and moving like yoga, kickboxing, running, skating, swimming , martial arts, belly dancing.
Sit down and work out a schedule to help you feel more balanced . I'm not saying plan everything to the minute, just have a general plan for what you need to accomplish in your day. Take control. Budget you time & money. Watch you eating habits. I find if I take time before hand to workout what I expect for my day it goes a lot smoother. I hope my advice helped . Good Luck .

I wish I only had 3 issues. I am confused if you want to compare my story (& others) with yours or if you really want an answer, or if you are trying to contiue avoiding. I will take just 1 approach. Pick just one "issue" to deal with at a time. You mentioned messy first. Wash the dishes in the sink, pick up your clothes & wash them, brush your teeth. You will be on a role being less messy & less avoiding others or maybe yourself. Glad taht you are content with your past choices. Sorry you are not happy with present ones. Make a new decision to tackle just one & grow with it. I am not a kid either. When was the last time you had a physical? Now when was the last time you did some sort of physical activity (with in Dr.s orders)? So take a walk, ride a bike, jog, swim, etc. Then slowly increase to level you & Dr. is happy with. Debt, Keep track of every penny you spend for a month, then look at simple things you can cut out. Don't spend what you don't have. Should I go on? You seem like the rest of us. We just have to keep working on ourselves to live a balanced life. I would ask what new thing have you tried to do (for free) lately? Read a book, take a lesson, do something for others.

OK, let's take the problems one at a time.
1. messy - the easiest thing to do is try to keep everything in its place and if it doesn't have a place, to find one. Also, whenever you can throw something out, do so. I think this could help alleviate a lot of the mess.
2. debt - only buy what you really need and nothing else.
3. lose a few pounds - diet and exercise - there are no magic answers.
Best of luck to you and try, try, and you will succeed.

I believe you are depressed, even though you "say" you are happy. Your happiness is with life "in general", but you are depressed about the other three things. Unfortunately, if you don't take action to correct what's depressing you, those things will only continue to get worse; furthering your depression.
However, fortunately, your problems stem from poor habits, which can easily be corrected. The mistake most people make however, is that they try to do too much to correct the problem, which causes them to give up, because it's too time consuming or difficult. Therefore the secret to overcoming those problems is to set ridiculously low goals in each of those catagories, until you have established the "habit" of doing them.
For example; one sit-up, and one push-up each morning. Such a low goal will seem quit ridiculous, and perhaps even funny, but do not exceed your goal, until you've established a firm habit. Then increase it slightly, and repeat the process over and over again, until you are doing what is needed to make yourself happy. In not exceeding your low goal, you will find that you will "want" to do more, which are positive thoughts about the three things you now think negatively about, and have thus allowed to happen.
A habit usually takes about 30 times to become a habit. As far as being messy goes, set a ridiculously low goal of picking up one additional thing, than you would normally pick up. And for your debts, spend one time less a day, than you normally would, or find one way to save a little money each day.
It took you many years of negative thinking, and bad habits to get you to where you are today, so don't expect to change them overnight, or the reasons you chose to originally think that way will become again more important to you. Good luck!

Well, I used to be all three those things. I started by trying to be organised. I cleaned my house and made it look nice, so that when people come over I can be proud of myself for the effort. Then I tackled my dept... I left my job in 2003 and paid all my dept with my pension fund. ( saving heaps of money in the long run...) BUT I'm still fat. Joining Sureslim tomorrow... I have a meeting at 9:40. Maybe I can change that too. Since I actually started DOING something about these things I feel better about myself and feel that I can make a success of the diet. Wish you luck!

I too am messy, I started slow in fixing the problem. I organized one room of my house, cleaned it completely. Then for a week I did my usual things but made sure before I went to bed that I had that one room completely clean. The next week I did another room and then for a week followed did my usual things but made sure that both rooms were completely cleaned before I went to bed. I kept doing it until I had the whole house in the routine. I make sure I get up and throw something away right away, put things away as soon as I am done with them and do the dishes as soon as we are done eating the meal. It took a few months for me to completely follow my routine everyday, but now I do.
In debt, we are still working on that one, we are on a budget now. Hopefully we will be caught completely up soon.
Overweight, do crunches or other exercises while you are watching tv. Start a routine for exercise, get up a half hour earlier to exercise, it is hard at first but once you make it a habit you will find you just do it.

I am messy, but working in it. My debt is due to the fact I had to quit my job and relocate out of state with my hubby, and we have no one to sit so I can work.(no family or friends) So everything I buy goes on a visa, and hubby pays. I honestly think that every woman in the WORLD wants to lose a few pounds! That is...normal...I guess.
So, as far as advise, how could I tell someone what to do differently if I haven't done it for myself? Just be happy to be alive, and you are OK.

First of all, I'd like to say how happy I am to see how positive and friendly everyone has been in replying to this very sensitive question.
They're all right. No one is perfect. In fact, I hate that word "perfect". So many people get into depression because they think they have to be perfect. They end up falling down completely because of it.
Like everyone has said, start small, have faith in yourself and take control of what it is that you don't like.
Some good quotes are: "Everything is Mind"...you are what you think you are...so start thinking good, happy positive thoughts. "We come into this world with nothing, we leave with nothing"....everything in between is ours. And one of my fave quotes is, "Heaven is NOT a place you go to AFTER you die.
I hope we'll hear from you sometime in the near future and learn that you've found a way to have a better life.
