Hi,
As a point of reference, I have been an exec at a Fortune 500 company and studied business at Harvard. With that in mind, I assure you the glass ceiling is completely real for a variety of reasons.
First, some managers are relctuant to hire family women at department head level (or higher) positions. The time away from the office for maternity leave is very difficult to replace, and creates substantial strife when she returns.
Second, "The old boys club" is important. Believe it or not some men in the business world feel much more comfortable without women being present. I know this 2006, but there is an obvious difference between some execs with and without the presence of a woman.
Third, there is the concern that some of the male subordinates won't respect a female when she is promoted. Instead the less qualified male may be chosen simply because he is a safer choice. I think this is the absolute lamest reason, but I have heard this articulated numerous times.
Since you are writing a paper, I highly recommend the book "Play it like a man... Win it like a woman". This should provide a wealth of information for your assignment.
Lastly, I want to encourage you. Not all men are members of the old boys club, and as more women join the ranks of corporate execs, the ceiling will fade. Just don't let yourself get discouraged, and know that hard work will be rewarded in the end.

I am not sure I agree with your thesis, but that does not mean you are wrong. I will say that I believe this was 100% true in the 1970s and earlier. Also, I am sure that it still holds true today, but I do not believe it is the norm.
I do think that women have unique issues in the workplace that may cause them to be passed over for promotions. Many people believe that a woman with children will miss work more often and be less willing to travel than a woman without children, or even a man with children. Society's views on this are rapidly changing however.
There is an older gentleman who works for the same company as me. He does not approve of women in the workplace and is more demanding of women than men. It is nothing that anyone can really pinpoint, but the attitude is there.
As I said, I am not sure I agree. This doesn't mean I necessarily disagree either. I guess my thoughts are that, while women are still being passed by for promotions due to gender, society's views are giving more women opportunities to earn promotions than before.

I can't provide anything that will help you because nothing in my experience supports your thesis.
I have been working as an engineer in corporate america for 25 years
It is my experience that women receive equal training and are given every promotional advantage because management is trying to overcome the myth of the glass ceiling.
Just because I don't agree with your thesis, there are many that do, and if your unbiased research supports your thesis then you will write a good paper and you will be a wiser, more educated person
go for it

The question of whether a glass ceiling exists is easily answered. It absolutely does, but finding where it exists is the difficult part. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has issued statements about glass ceilings: see www.eeoc.gov

The glass ceiling is meant to be broken! Women are as educated as men, they have to work, and they can do as good a job- if not better. The glass ceiling is a man's invention to keep women down!

The glass ceiling represents a choice most women make. That choice is to have children. When you have kids you lose days of work and therefore you are not as reliable as the men who do not have to do that (they call their wives to do it).
If you make the choice to never have kids and be at work everyday then the glass ceiling dissolves and you will reach beyond it.

Yes! Thanks for asking! It's about TIME someone did!
First of all I hate the glass ceiling because you can see right up the skirts of the ladies on the 2nd floor. That might appeal to some perverts out there but not to wholesome people like me. Also I find that there is a lot of glare from the glass ceiling and lately I have been getting migraines. I might have to file for Workers' Comp.
Also I am VERY afraid that the whole glass ceiling will just DROP one day....and will shatter all over me and my coworkers, resulting in a bloody mess.

As someone who considers it a glass floor, I walk softly and carry a big stick.
