Wow lots of plain wrong answers up there...
Sit ups not created equal. Most performed improperly... especially if toning butt muscles! Most are actually using their legs and back... which is a terrible idea! Better ways(minimize injuries) to exercize those muscles.
Secure your toes/foot(a partner squating and holding them good) under a weight sufficient to NOT be able to lift off ground with feet.
Feet secured- back flat on floor- raise knees until 90%(right angle) formed with legs. Form X with arms on top of chest.
Using stomache muscles lift off ground and slowly head towards feet... slowly return towards ground BUT DO NOT make contact.
Repeat. When too tired to stay off ground STOP. You will NOT be doing yourself any good by continuing.
This is a true sit up which isolates the exercise to the target muscles avoiding common injuries and general waste of time.
People who say they can do hundreds of situps usually are lucky to exceed five of these. Starting from scratch try for three. Do this every other day(allows muscle to build/recover). You'll know you're doing it right as your stomach muscles will be SORE!. And when you're up to 50 or more you should be noticing real tum-tum muscles!

Sit ups can really flatten your tummy, I would suggest you start out once a day with at least 25, then increase by 5 at a time maybe 2 times a day.

Sit ups strengthen the abdominal muscles. In order to be effective you can start out with 10 and gradually add more up to 100. Do them in sets of 10. You can vary the style but make sure you protect your low back. You can also add crunches.

Sit up will do nothing for you, unless you follow a clean diet! Not even 1000 sit ups a day!

Sit ups help you with your abs...but don't do too many normal sit ups because it will give you and ugly bulge...try cross over sit ups where you cross your right elbow to your left knee and your left elbow to your right knee...I don't know how much you should do, it depends on how toned you want your abs...maybe 60 on each side each day...oh and if you hate doing sit ups on the floor, try belly dancing or tai bo...they give you effortless abs....=D

Invest in an ab-lounger. It targets certain areas with different movements. I usually dont buy tv products but this one really words if you use it. Sit ups can make you tone up in one place but not the other. Happy workout
