Mazda 3GT could be a better choice if you compare Civic EX, a GT with 17" sport rim and low profile suspension coil will be much sexier that EX, performance wise , still GT better, futhermore xenon light will cost you a lot if you want to install one....
I would said: Mazda GT in black...

the 3 is a far better car than the EX for the money. If you could afford an SI, I would say the honda.
You'll love the 2.3L engine - it's got a lot of pep. Not too sure about the transmission - I've only driven the 2.0L manual and 2.3L auto in the Mazda3. Didn't care for the 2.0, love the 2.3.
TBH, the Honda is a good car - they both are. Both are made in the states (Honda's in Marysville, if I remember the sticker on my car it's Illinois somewhere for the Mazda) and come with good warranties. It all comes down to which one you could see yourself in (and how tall you are). I'm over 6' and can't squish into the new Civics/RSX for the life of me, even with the seat lowered and pushed fully back, and the steering wheel raised.

If those were your only choice I would go with the Mazda. However in my opinion those cars are good for teenagers, which I am not. I would prefer one that has the power but also has a bit more luxury, like a Camry or Accord.

i would get the mazda it is an under rated auto for a better price - it is even made in japan while the honda is not.
