I think it varies from woman to woman. Of course its better if you do not smoke at all but I dont see how 1 cigg per day would really harm the baby. Just remember everytime you inhale everything you take in, your baby also takes in.
I know people that smoked throughout their whole pregnancy and their baby was fine, but then again I also know people that smoked and now their babies have asthma. Smoking can also cause low birth rate.
I was a smoker before I got pregnant, I smoked about a pack a day.... the day that test came back positive that I was preggers, I quit.

Good luck to you.... whatever you choose to do.

What is not known is the exact effect that only one cigarette a day will have on your fetus. What is known and has been proved over the years is that, one cigarette will slow down the transfer of oxygen to the blood cells which in turn will be hampered from getting to your fetus. If you are a moderate to heavy smoker this is happening more and more each day. The one cigarette may not hurt your fetus but then it will not help your fetus much at all.

Studies have shown that with the lack of oxygen to the fetus, the fetus, (That is your baby) will have difficulty to get the correct nutrients and developer or the nine months you carry it. The effects may be none, to several birth defects, such as, premature births, underside growth, underside heart or limbs, damage brain cells, heart decease, Asthma, to name a few and still births.

These are the facts on smoking while preggo as you put it.

The choice is yours, taking care of a healthy baby is hard enough but taking care of one with one or more birth defects is just harder than need be. So the best is if you can cut down to one cigarette a day why not give your unborn baby a better chance at life and just stop all together.

But theses are the facts. You like to roll the dice and see who wins?

The main effect I hear is low birth weight. Others could be asthma, possible pre-term delivery, and other respiratory problems.

I know a few moms that have smoked more than one cigarette a day and the babies came out fine. Anyways, smoke isn't good for you - so it's definitely not good for the baby. The effects are a few - but I don't think it happens to everyone. So I don't know - Do whatever you think is right. I know smoking is addictive, which makes it really hard to quit - but try if you can.

I think it could affect it but at the same time may not, some people smoke 20 cigarettes a day through pregnancy and their babys are fine except that they will probably be smokers themselves, also I guess it would depend on your physical health for the babys sake.. but I would go see your doctor about it first

It has its risks. I smoked all through my first pregnancy and still do with this one. I have cut back but not completely quit. My doc said to not quit cold turkey because it can send the baby into withdrawl. So if you quit do it slowly. But if its only one a day I doubt there should be a problem quiting.

P.S. First child completely fine and healthy. His only problem was that he inherited a family heart murmur (sp). This one looks to be just as healthy, and infact a little ahead of schedule in weight and height.

Your baby will be at risk for serious birth defects. The defects can range from Autism and Asthma to mental retardation and physical deformities. The possibilities are many and awful. For a full list goto: http://whyquit.com/whyquit/LinksBirth.html

Here is some advice from a form smoker:

If you are down to 1 per day, 0 per day is easy. After 72 hours you will have no nicotine left in your system, but you will have a 1 to 3 week period of psychological difficulty. But if you are committed to quitting, it won't be hard.

The best way to stay quit is to do lots of internet research. When I quit I read many websites that helped tremendously. One I specifically remember is http://www.quitnet.net.

I know its not easy, but I also know you are capable of quitting. And you will be happy you did so later. :)

It doesn't cause damage to the baby's lungs... .

It does cause low birth weight, among a whole host of other bad things, so says the surgeon general.

You should try googling "effects of smoking during pregnancy".

I don't think many people on here are going to give you lots of facts... probably more flames. :-(

Good luck.
