can u mod a laptop battery with just any rechargeable battery?

i have an old laptop (NEC versa premium) the battery is dead and i want to mod it in anyway...

Try it, but if it blows up don't say I didn't tell you to READ YOUR FREAKING MANUAL!!!!

NO!
The output must match exactly or the machine won't work properly.
In many of the older laptops, you couldn't even get them on by plugging them in if the battery was bad; it was used as a filter in the circuit.
Search for the make/model & you may find a battery available.
