No, I don't think they are selfish, I think they lack willpower, or have a genetic predisposition to be addicted to whatever it is they are addicted to. Most of all, I think they are weak and unable to resist instant gratification for delayed future gratification. They are only able to do what they want to do NOW, versus what will help them in the future.

Yes. They want to get away from their problems by masking them with something else. They should learn to just deal with life, and move on.
Or they can do the most selfish thing of all, and commit suicide!

No..An addiction isnt something they have much control over... Its like you eating...Does that make you selfish becuase you eat? To them it feels that it is something they need to survive... If you had a needle stuck in your foot nicking the bone, would you be selfish to have it removed?

I think they are sad...they may have been selfish initially, then got into a situation where they found they didn't have the strength or willpower to remove themselves...

I'm thankful I haven't experienced anything like that myself.

i think it varies. Some people might be selfish because they see what they are doing to others but they simply don't care. But i think other people just are over whelmingly sad and don't know of any other way to deal with their problems, or sadness.
