my boss asked me to explain logistics

"The smooth and timely flow of materials from place to place. Logistics has three aspects: (1) the shipping of inventories from place to place; (2) the storage of inventories of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods; and (3) the handling of materials throughout the network."

That is the textbook definition. But I think most people think of logistics as the easiest way to do things like minimizing the distance traveled by workers to get a job done in a warehouse for example by putting all the hot sellers closest to the shipping dock.

Logistics is handling the movement of goods into and out of a warehouse and beyond.

There are several type of transactions which can take place.
Receiving: Receipt of parts into the warehouse
Shipping: Shipment of parts outside the warehouse
Adjustment: Misc. receipt or issue based on cycle count discrepancies.
Inventory transfer: Movement of goods inside a warehouse (usually from one bin to another)
