There will be at least 12 planets in our solar system, and probably many more, if a new definition of the word "planet" is adopted. Next week the International Astronomical Union (IAU) will vote on a draft definition of what distinguishes a planet from lesser space rocks.

The new scheme would retain Pluto – previously threatened with ejection from the club – but it would also admit several new members, including the former asteroid Ceres, and even Charon, which until now has been classed as Pluto's moon.

There are now eight planets, since Pluto was demoted. We did have nine, and there was a proposal to add three more for a total of 12, including Pluto. But that opened the door to possibly even more planets being added, because new ones are being discovered all the time, some that are bigger than Pluto. So to prevent that from happening, Pluto was stripped of its title as a planet, thus raising the bar for what one is and leaving us with 8.

There are 12 large bodies I think, 8 of which are planets (Pluto is no longer considered a planet). I used to remember the order of the planets like this;
Many
Vicars
Eat
Marmalade and
Jam
Sandwiches
Until
Nightly
Prayers.

Now I'll have to knock the prayers out!

The original number of planets was seven: Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, in orbit order outwards according to the Ptolemaic system.

Yesterday, there were 9 planets. Today there are 8. This is so traumatic. Did anyone else feel the slight bump as the gravitational pull changed ?
