The 13 colonies were involved in trading/selling the American wood, tabacco and other things to England and other countries. They had mills and factories of sorts. Lots of them were farmers and supplied the food to the larger cities. Of course there were the bars and inns and schools also to work in. Hope this helps.

Trade was the more common thing among the 1st settlers. & New York was nothing like it is today.. It was fields, trees, prairys, ....Sure there was a city.. but not even close to the chaotic New York of today.
Back then peoples priority wasn't just money & material things.. there were alot of good, honest, hardworking people, that cared about more about others & raising their familys.. They didn't just care about themselves, money, & keeping up with trendy things...like today!
They had to make thier own way...clothes, grow/raise their own food or hunt for food, build their own little houses. ... ect.
People weren't "greedy, materialistic a..holes like today." They did what they could to help one & other & live happily.
For instance.. If I raised beef & dairy cattle & nothing else. & you raised pigs & had plenty in the way of veggies.. We would make a fair deal & trade our goods.
Hope that helps some.
To live back in those days would be tough.. but man would it be nice!
God Bless
