Opinions only huh? I would say it is the study of the "soul" for lack of a better word. It doesn't focus on thought or emotion, but on the mental "person" as a whole.

Psychology is the study of all the influences on human behavior from infancy to old age, and an attempt to construct a healing science akin to medicine to deal with wounds that disrupt healthy, free human functioning. It is a science that centers on individuals, not societies, but which nevertheless, overlaps with sociology, biology, genetics, medicine, chemistry, etc. Psychologists assume that almost everyone has the potential function optimally. Yet, psychology does not assert that there is one version of normal. It's diagnoses are all meant to identify behaviors and states that impede one from enjoying life.

Unfortunately, when the state gets involved in psychology and ideas of "healthy and normal", inevitably problems arise, since a sovereign state is defined by having a monopoly on violence, enforcement, etc. Consequently, those in power have an investment in using psychology and "the mental health system" to define in stone what normal is. Thus doctors quickly became a key tool of political power, and even genocide, in Nazi Germany. Optimally, though, psychology is a healing and helping science that tries to deal with human nature realistically, as it is, and provide guidance for healthy, happy living given such realities.

I see patterns and images. Most are universal. Yet I influence the material. Sometimes the changes happen due to a combination of things. Yet, psychology is organic in that it expands and contracts. And so does it's definition.
