He didn't agree with what was going on politically during that time, he rejected the norm and was imprisoned/banished for his thoughts and practices. That is what his writing the prince is based on, "it is better to be feared than to be loved", he wrote on how to be a feared leader and how to dominate and stay in power. This was not liked during a time of divine kingship, he thought that the better leaders were those that did what was necessary to keep the state in good standings.
