I'm a lawyer, but I'll only hit the highlights for you.

Essentially what the lawyer will do is:
1. Have you sign a contract hiring him for this case.
2. Send a representation letter to the other side, stating that they may no longer talk directly to you, only the lawyer.
3. Obtain a copy of the police report, and all other documents that support the claim, such as medical bills and reports, and lost wage statements.
4. Send a demand package to the other party, or more likely their insurance company. This includes all of the bills, police report, etc. and a specific dollar demand for settlement.
5. Call the other party or their claims adjuster and negotiate the claim.
6. If negotiations are unsuccessful, draft a complaint, file it at the court, and serve all defendants.

My boyfriend's a lawyer, I tried to get him to answer, because I know he knows and I don't. But, he's never been into talking on the Web.

Too bad, and I'm sorry. One will come along I'm sure who will be able to give you a straight answer.
