I have a great wish to go into the media but am not sure exactly. I am thinking of just a change but I need advice as to how to proceed systematically.

go to night school, and take some media classes. You can maybe start interning at a radio or tv station while you still teach until you have enough skills to get a full time job in the media. I say GO FOR IT! I started my career later in life...school took me forever since I had major financial problems and could not really afford to be in school. Everyone told me to give up and try another career, but I finished and got a full time job doing what I love. Glad I did not feel I was too old and settle for something else or I would have always thought in the back of my head "what if".

I am not sure what you mean by proceeding systematically.

This is what I think:
1) check into a college or university's offerings for media (what do you mean by that, anyway?) You may be able to take a few courses to fulfill the degree requirement.
2) Maybe work in a tv station, radio station, etc. over the summer to get an idea what is involved. If you can't work, volunteer, intern.
3) try grad school in the area of media- do your grad work in the summer and during the regular semester. It will take time and work, but, if it's important to you, do it- don't worry that your in your 40s. Now is the time to explore.

i dont think there is a systematic way to make a career change. its a gamble no matter what way you look at it, especially if you dont know what you want. this is the computer age, you can research your options in what ever field you want. youve got to feel it tho, i dont think you can want to be something without a passion for it and be successful. someone in their 40s will be limited in some phases of the media. i wish you luck.

Well, I hope you are not an English teacher.

Which grade are you in? GEO? How about applying for a switch into the general civil service schemes?

What educational background do you have (degrees)? What do you teach? What kind of media holds your interest? Print? Television? Radio?

In your 40's, to me says take a gamble. We only live once and where ever your dreams drift you, take a flight with them.
