I've read it a long time ago.

If I remember correctly, it is told from the point of view of "The Onceler", a remorseful industrialist who during his youth made a killing in the market by exploiting the (I can't remember) trees.

The Lorax, who speaks for the trees, attempts to show The Onceler the error of his ways destroying the trees. He finally goes away when the Onceler clearcuts the trees and create for himself a wasteland and his business is ruined.

The symbolism is the trees represent any limited resource. The lorax is environmentalists and conservationists. The onceler is big business.

You can relate the story to today's forests... the Amazon, perhaps? The oil industry... or a real past occurence is the depletion of fish populations in the Atlantic.

That is a great story. I read it for the first time in the 3rd grade and never forgot it. The main character comes to this place filled with truffula trees and plans to use the trees to make "thneeds," but as he cuts the first tree the Lorax comes out and tries to persuade the main character to stop cutting down the trees. The main character consumed by power and greed continues to chop down all the trees and pollutes the land so much that all the creatures have to move away. The Lorax is the last to leave and he leaves the message "unless." It's a powerful message for all that unless we care about the earth, the earth will never get better and all the creatures will die.

Read the book. It will take you 10 - 15 minutes at most and maybe you'll learn something...too lazy to read? Rent the movie.

It's not a long story. You can read the general storyline online and decide what you think.
