Whenever I wash my zippered hoodies, I'm not sure what happens - either the zipper elongates, or the hoodie shrunk while the zipper didn't, or something. In any case, after it's washed, the zipper is too long for the hoodie, so if the hoodie lies flat (like when it's on me), the zipper bulges out and/or ripples. How do I prevent/reverse that?

you have a bunch of good answers already except the person who said the zipper is shrinking; it's the hoodie that is shrinking & the zipper not shrinking (or shrinking less). Anyway, yes, do wash inside out cold water wash on gentle & hang dry. May need to gently streach out the long way, but hanging up to dry should do that naturally.
But sometimes hang-dry after spinning in the washer will leave wrinkles. There are two ways to deal with that--you can dry it it in the dryer, but just a very short time on low in the dryer (inside out again) alone but with some DRY towels to tumble with--just enough to get the wrinkles that were from the spin dry; the hoodie will still be very damp, then hang again to dry. The other way is to iron while wet & hang to dry.

The zipper fabric is shrinking and the hoodie is not. Hence, your problem.
Don't dry on a high setting. Remove it from the dryer damp. Hang it to continue to dry on a plastic hanger (metal makes marks) and zip the hoodie up. Stretch the zipper out by hand and reshape it. It should make a significant differance.

Turn it inside out, and I always put mine in a larger mesh laundry bag (which can be purchased at a $1 store). Wash in warm or cold water, on the gentle cycle. When finished I stretch the material to straighten it and shapen it. Then dry it on wooden coat hanger on the line. Even after it is dry, it can be stretched somewhat. Hope this helps.

I have this same problem this is how I solved the problem.
hen you take it out of the washer stretch the hoodie back to the size it was. I don't dry it in the dryer and I wash on cold. Trust me it works.

Wash it inside out, on the gentle cycle. Lay it flat on the kitchen table, or other large space with a towel under it and on top.

MAYBE, never tried it though, laying books or heavy object on top of the zipper while its laying flat as it drys

My daughter always has trouble with this too.
She zips it up before washing. Uses cold water. And she doesn't put the hoodie in the dryer. She dries it on a hanger. They look much better since she's been doing that.

2. Use warm water, not hot
3. Dry on permanent press
