Did you buy accidental warranty coverage for it? If not, I really wouldn't lie, but I will share with you this very important news. Dell has been doing a lot of recalling on the batteries they've been selling with their notebook computers because they're overheating and sometimes catching on fire. Headlines of that are all over the Internet and on TV. Do with that information as you wish.
If you are as honest as I am I would just fork out the money to have it repaired. If you do it yourself it could be around $100. If you have someone do it for you it could cost over $400.

I doubt they'll cover it, but hey it's worth a phone call. I don't know how much it would cost but I would guess a lot (those LCD screens aren't cheap.) Maybe you could find a replacement from a defective laptop with a good screen on ebay?

I used to work for the warranty company that covers Dell computers. A cracked screen is considered physical damage (not a defect) and unfortunately is not covered.

I would call Dell and try it.
Tell them that you just noticed it and you never move the laptop from your desk. Make a story up. Dell hates it when you suggest that you feel that they aren't taking care of you as a customer and that you will jump ship if you don't feel that their support is adequate.
Ever since dell outsourced to india they have taken a hit on customer service. They use to be number 1 in technical support. Now just about everyone dreds talking indian tech support. They will want to keep your business.

The screen can be repace, but it will be expensive.
Depends on what size is your screen, it can cost up to one thousand dollars.

Call their Tech Support and ask. OOPS, sorry, you probably don't want to spend several hours waiting for them to answer.
I have a Compaq and have never waited more than 2 mins for HP tech support. Online chat tech support is just as quick.

They offer the same coverage that you get with a dozen eggs. If you drop them on the sidewalk, no one is going to pay for your error.
