My friend completely disagrees with me. I got bamboozled into being in this play. I know I can't act my way out of a paper bag. The INEXPERIENCED director always says, "You'll be fine!"
She's wrong ...right?

From a previous question you asked, I know that you teach third grade. Your students, in this case, have something to teach you! How often do you see them at recess or in their down time using their imaginations? (hopefully quite a bit unless TV and video games have completely robbed them of their creativity). Take a note from them: Look at the script as well as other materials concerning the play and imagine that this is you. If something tragic happens in the plot, how would YOU feel? Use this technique for the gamut of emotions covered in the story. And the biggest piece of advice I can give is also the toughest to follow: shed your self consciousness! When you act, you aren't a 3rd grade teacher, you are the character! Good luck!

Nope. Not everyone can act. Some people have NO facility whatsoever for reciting lines, and, what's even more important, some people have NO desire or ability to behave in a "normal" manner while being observed by an audience...which is the actor's stock-in-trade.

We all "act" every day of our lives. But, to give a PERFORMANCE is something else entirely. Bottom line: if you have misgivings about being in the show, and if it's not a pleasurable experience for you...you might want to find a better way to occupy your time.

Everyone knows what it's like to pretend, and most people know what it is to lie. There are some aspects of acting that everyone can do.

But no, not everyone can make someone else's words sound like their own, not everyone can overcome their fear at being in front of an audience and being judged, not everyone can let go of feeling foolish and just go with it. And not everyone can put themselves in someone else's shoes in order to understand and play a character.

And to the poster who said Marilyn Monroe couldn't act, I'd beg to differ. She certainly ended up playing the same role over and over again, but she was brilliant at it. She was very funny, and very few actresses have done the dumb blonde thing as well as she did it.

Your problem is not acting. Your problem is your negative mindset.
You don't want to do this. That's the problem.
Drop your negativity.

Anyone can act.

You first scene is to act you want to act.

Everyone can pretend they're someone else.
Whether acting comes across as natural or not is dependent on your own state of consciousness.
If you are aware that you are acting, you'll be rigid and unnatural.
The best actors can live outside themselves. They don't play the roles. They become the roles they play.

Immerse yourself in it.
Lose yourself.

You'll find yourself doing much better than you believe.

NO not everyone can act, but that doesn't stop a lot of them. Acting is a craft and is not as easy as people (usually people who don't act) think it is. You need to train and study. If you have a natural talent for it you may not even know it until try. The trick to acting as Kevin Spacey put it is "not to get caught doing it." Good luck.

I think that nobody is born to be a good actor; they just become. Of course being talented is important, but acting needs mainly self-confidence and willingness to expose yourself to your audience. I've been taking part in the acting group of my school for three years. I've seen children who didn't really believe they could act, but they believed they could improve themselves and they finally made it. I mean that if you really want to act and work hard for it, you'll be fine no matter what the others think.

Not everyone has the aptitude/interest. If you think it will be an enjoyable/enriching experience, get out of it what you can. Learn, stretch, enjoy the friendships. If you are going to be unhappy throughout the process, it will not be worth it to you OR the director. If you are going to quit, do it early so there is time to recast.

I think everyone can act, I don't see what's so hard about it. It's like a grown up way of playing make believe.

Pretend to be the character, emit emotions you've experienced. It's no big deal at all. You WILL be fine.
