Neither. The major forms of political ideology and public policy in continental European countries are variations of either Social Democracy or Christian Democracy. Both view the state as an important protector of individual rights, but Europeans have a more expansive definition of individual rights which includes protections against the harsher side effects of a capitalist economy. The result is an extensive social security system. The biggest disagreement between the two ideologies is over the way the state should provide social security, not if it should. This makes the dimensions of political contention in Europe significantly different than in the United States where Democrats are generally in favor of broad social protections and Republicans are increasingly hostile to government in general.

Whether they are right or left is no matter because they all believe in "internationalism" and the U.N. They love to send their troops to Lebanon to put on the blue helmets. France just committed 1600 troops to Lebanon to wear the blue helmets.
