There are two common ways. One way (less precise) is the use of body fat calipers. A certified trainer at a health gym could probably do it for you. They measure the thickness of skin/fat at a few locations on your body---waist, back, arms.
The most precise way is the water displacement method. You would have to find a place that does this. They immerse your whole body under water in a special tub, and can make a more accurate calculation of body fat.

The best way is to be weighed under water. However, that is not easy to do and not always accurate (you have to empty the air out of your lungs). There are alternate methods; a skin fold test can give a good result, but should be done by someone qualified to do it. There are also electronic devices availble that claim to measure fat percentage, as well as scales that include such devices. I don't know how accurate these are. I use the Omron Body Logic fat analyzer:

You can have it done at your doctors office, or by a professional trainer at a gym. There are also some weight scales that you can purchase that also will give you your BMI (percent body fat). I have one and it works wonderfully. it is a Tanita. You can also go to yahoo health, and they have a BMI calculator. It will give you a good estimate but I would not accept it as entirely accurate.
