Either you have a virus (yes, there was one that did this) or you have a heat problem with your procesing chip.
Get a good Virus Scan Program - UPDATE IT REGULARLY - and RUN SCANS REGULARLY. (Like weekly!)
As for possible Adware/Spyware/Malware, get these:
Adaware SE Personal
Spybot sEarch and Destroy
Microsoft Defender.
A study was done by a reputable computer magazine which showed that these three had the best possible record when used in concert. As with your Virus Scan, UPDATE THEM REGULARLY and run scans as often as you can - even daily.
If this does not take care of the problem, it could be that the processor chip is most likely overheating. Open the case and look at the fan on top of the chip. Is the fan on? If not, this is an easy piece to replace. No need to remove the chip or heat sink (that metal thing on top of the chip) just remove the fan and unplug it. Replace with a similar fan.
Now, if THAT doesn't take care of the problem, you may need to take it to a tech.

I need more information.
Do you get any error messages before it shuts down?
How long does the computer stay on before it shutsdown.
Examples of Possibilities:
1. Your processor could be overheating and a sensor in the BIOS is tripped and the BIOS is programmed to shutdown when the sensor is tripped due to excessive heat.
2. You could have a virus
3. You have either a bad memory module or a bad memory bank on the motherboard.
4. Or a bad motherboard

Most auto shut downs are due to heat. You Computer might be dirty and need cleaning. Unplug and remove the cover and vacuum (not with brush attachment). Use Q-tips and alcohol and clean the fan blades and heat sink.
Restart computer with cover off and make sure the fans are running and properly.
If auto shutdown continues then try the tips at this site.

Malware, usually, doesn't shutdown your computer. That defeats what they are programed to do.

It sounds like you have spyware or even a virus which has changed something in your registry, causing it to shut down. It happened to me before. I'd start the computer in safe mode and scan with both anti-spyware programs (such as spybot s&d and ad-aware) and also antivirus such as AVG which is free.

we have xp and that happens to us...I don't know if it's the same problem as yours, but our is an overheating issue. We don't have the money to fix it right now, so we took the sides off and put a box fan blowing directly into it. It works now!
