What happened to people compromising?

Both sides believe they're right, they won't compromise, unless a really good idea is brought up, and even so they'd have to get permission from the party... It seems to me like a lot of the time they don't agree just to keep the split in the parties, and to keep dems voting for dem, and reps voting for reps...
