DON'T SUCK THE VENOM OUT - it doesn't work. If you've been bit, call an ambulance, and don't run around. That increases they blood pressure and that makes the venom flow faster.
Here are some other don'ts:
DON'T eat or drink
DON'T suck the venom out
DON'T take an antivenin unless advised to do so by a physician
DON'T use a tourniquet, ice, electric shock. or suction (a tourniquet stops the blood circulation above the wound, and that increases blood pressure to the limb wth the venom, forcing the poison through the blood, maximazing your chance of losing that limb)

DO note the snakes appearance to describe to doctors later on
DO remove watches, rings, or any confining jewelry
DO get yourself out of the vicinity of the snake to prevent more bites

No, sucking out the poison does not work...that is an old wives tale. This is what you should do if bitten: Stay calm. Remove rings or tight clothes near the bite. Keep the bite area still and a little lower than the level of your heart. If medical care is far away, you may wrap the area tightly just above the bite. Use an elastic bandage or a piece of cloth. This is called a constriction band. Make sure you can get 2 fingers between the constriction band and the skin. If the area below the band feels numb, it is too tight. Then get to a hospital within 30 minutes if possible..the sooner the better for your chances of survival to be treated with an anti-venom.

Sucking the poison out is a TV and movie myth.

By the time you cut a large enough opening, you would probably bleed to death first.
If you have any cavities, you will just be reinfecting yourself.

If you get bit by a poisonous snake, tie a tourniquet above the bite, stay calm and get to the hospital as soon as possible.

Your friend is right. Sucking the bite does not work. Fortunately fatal bites are extremely rare in the US. If you do get bitten, go to the emergency room where the can give antivenin and a shot of adrenaline if you go into shock.

Sucking a snake bit(poisonous) will do no good. Stay calm is your best bet. In must cases you get sick but don't die. It depends on what snake bits you. Just watch what you're doing.
