Edgar Rice Burroughs, Peter David, Robert Aspirin, Robert B. Parker, Sue Grafton, Ellery Queen, David Weber, Terry Brooks (although I wish he would right more Magic Kingdom of Landover novels), Anne McCafrey, and Douglas Adams.

definitely dr suess. after having read them to my children and reliving my childhood through their eyes, you realize how fantastically written these books were.
