I've seen that the passing rate is quite low (only 4 people at our school took it, and 2 passed...).

How can people grade you on your art? (not saying that a squiggle deserves a 5 :), people all have different opinions of beauty. Doesn't effort and uniqueness have a say in anything or is it up to the reviewer's taste?

By the way, you submit your drawings copied onto these small transparent slides for the exam, right?
Comments welcome!
Thanks!

There are some elements of design that can't be compromised, like balance, harmony, value shifts, motion... it's not enough to be able to say "This is pretty" - you must be able to say "This is WHY this is pretty".

These elements apply to all forms of art, whether it's classical painting, abstract, sculpture, web design, or a spark plug label.

The best way to understand these elements is to study the masters' works, from classical right up to contemporary. Whether or not we agree that a certain piece of art is "beautiful", we have to learn what elements make them work as a whole, and apply those elements to our own art.

Your apparent understanding of the elements of design will decide your grade, along with your apparent understanding of technique. Effort and uniqueness come after these.

Good fortune in your experience and with your exam.

Grade art on whether or not the criteria for the project was met. It is true you can not grade 'how well' something was drawn or painted of sculpted because of levels of experience in the student. But you CAN grade on whether or not they achieved what was assigned, was the concept of the given assignment understood and was in turned in in the assigned amount of time alloted? For example: You assign a project that involves 2 point perspective using geometric shapes and a light source in the picture from the top left. Did the student meet the criteria of 2 vanishing points on the horizon line? Consistant highlight and shading on the correctly executed geometric shapes? Grade also on craftmanship and not neccesarily on if a 'masterpiece' was created, just if a basic understanding of what was assigned.

Art is subjective, so you're right, effort and uniqueness does count. There are also things like craftsmanship and content. Everyone has a different opinion of what's aesthetically pleasing, but skill level is more objective. Yes, drawings are submitted through slides. Have fun working on your portfolio.
