Books are wonderful gifts. He should almost be ready to start paying attention to an adult reading to him and he can look at the pictures. I highly recommend the Karen Katz books such as "What Does Baby Say?", "Where Is Baby's Bellybutton" and "Where Is Baby's Mommy?"

They are brightly colored flap books and you can get them on Amazon or at your local bookseller. My kids loved those books and those books have really started a love of reading in my kids.

There are now lots of really great musical toys out there that he will love playing with and will also stimulate his brain!

You could also buy him a savings bond etc. Because this is the one birthday he'll be more interested in the paper/box than what's in it!

When they are turning one it is always a good idea to get them a toy that they can walk with and push that makes music. I know they have a pooh toy like that and my daughter got one for her first birthday that sings the abc's and 123 song. It lights up and everything. You may pay about 30 dollars for it but they love it. It also helps them as they walk around the house. Or a scooter that they sit on and they can ride themself around on it. It's somewhat like a bike but no peddles they just use their feet to get around on it.

I'd get him a small teddy bear and a savings bond for when he goes to college. He won't remember what you gave him for his 1st birthday, so give him something he can use in the future. I got a savings bond every year from a family friend, I had a good little nest egg when it was time for me to go to college.

Diapers.

Toys and gifts are pretty useless to a 1 year old. Maybe a savings bond that he can use when he gets older?

since he still too young to realllly appreciate b-days u should get things for the parents like clothes as u've said, diapers!, and maybe a gift card for baby's r us (then they could get exactly what they need and u dont have to worry about geting him the same toy as he already has lol) but things like that r ALWAYS appreciated

I was given a Veggie Tales CD and a Wiggles CD for my sons first birthday, and out of all the gifts given, he still loves his music.

Mothers most desperately need diapers. "stuff" he won't play with for very long and then it gets sold at garage sales. especially new mothers who don't "have it made" it's the weekly day to day things that really get them down if they don't have enough money for food & diapers

My neice just turned one in June. And I babysit a little girl who turned one this month. Both of them love to play with balls. That is their favorite thing. They also like anything that makes noise.
