the 123 is for example would be a 300D turbodesiel a 126 would eather be a 300se 300SEL 420SEL 560SEL there is more versions over in europe im sure. The 123 had been a shorter bodystyle when the 126 had been more like a bigger nicer car the 123 had been built like tanks...both the 123 and 126 are exelent cars. 126 stands for the body style i have a 126 300SE and it is the body number then engine number of it is 103, when with my 74 mercedes 240D the body number is 115 wich is the body just before the 123 and then engine number in the 115 is 615...hope that gives you a better understanding.

126 is more luxurious than 123.Engine and every other thing is also better in 126 than in 123.
And also 126 was a newer model than 123 which came late to the market.
And the most interesting thing is that 126 was the Mercedes Benz S-Class between the years of 1979-1992.
So 126 still has that very good reputaion in Asian countries though they are old.
Hope this will answer your question well

I've owned both. The W123 (available in the US from 1977 through 1985) was the "E-class" of its generation, before the term "E-class" existed. It has also been argued that the W123 is the "C-class" of its generation, as it was the lowest-end Mercedes available at the time. Due to very high build quality and comfort, the modern E-class is a better point of comparison. The diesels were much more popular than the gasoline versions in the U.S. There were three main body variants on the W123 - the coupe, the sedan, and the station wagon (there were also W123 limousines, though they were not common). Diesel models available were the 240D (sedan, non-turbo), the 300D (sedan, the early ones were non-turbo, after 1981 they were turbocharged), the 300CD (coupe, same as 300D re: turbocharging), and the 300TD (station wagon - see 300D and 300CD). The 240D was a 4-cylinder inline engine available only in the sedan. The Mercedes internal engine designation was OM 616. The 300D was a 5-cylinder inline engine, available as naturally aspirated as well as turbocharged, with an engine designation of OM 617. The W123 is considered by many to be the final evolution of the "classic" Mecedes sedan.

The W126 was the S-class of its era, available in the US from 1981 through 1992. There were diesel and gasoline versions available in the U.S., both very popular. Early W126 diesels (300SD) utilized the same OM 617 as in its smaller E-class brother, the 300D. The W126 cars came in three body variants, standard wheelbase sedan, long wheelbase sedan, and coupe. To this day, the W126 carries a reputation as being the choice of ttransporation of drug dealers and lawyers of the 80s. It was big, it was expensive, and they were built to last.

Many examples of both the W123 series cars as well as the W126 series cars can still be found on the road in active service today.
