Ok, I am a veteran of the Army. While I was active duty, I 'sprained' my ankle, which gave me bursitis in my hip. I have been out of the military since 02 and they (VA hospital) say that they can't do anything to them. IS there anything I can get done to stop the pain? surgically?

Also, my wrists are extremely weak and somtimes my hands go numb to my elbows. What could that be?

Additional Details

I do get comp. 10% for ankle and 10% for hip.

Can a sprained ankle last 4+ years?

If a sprained ankle can't last 4+ years, what else could it be?

Healing of sprains is typcially 4-8 weeks and at the most 4-6 months. If the sprain was severe enough to cause a ligmentous rupture, the chornic instability can cause pain and alter the mechanics of your foot...leading the other problems. Peroneal tendon insuffieciency is also a common poblem where the tendon does not ride in it's "normal groove" and slips in an out of place.

The first case could potentially be alleviated with a surgical fusion...but this is an extreme. The later may be a candidate for a tendon repair or tendon transfer (didn't Randy Johnson just have this sugery...or some other athlete?). You definetly need to seek out another opinion.

Numbness in the hands and elbows...espeically if in both arms, needs to be ruled out for medical issues first. Thorasic outlet syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, a cervical disc herniation, cervical stenosis can all cause numbness and tingling in the hands. Get this checked out first!

Well, no, it shouldn't last over 4 years.. but then the VA is NOT the best place to get health care..
Tell them you want a second opinion on the ankle AND the hip, and, that, if you can't get it from them, you WILL use an outside doctor, and you WILL give them the bill.

Wrist and elbow.A ulner nerve transposition may help you.See a neurologist for the indicated test.Bursitis of the hip can be surgically treated,Beware the cure may prove to be worst then the ailment.X-rays are indicated for your ankle concerns, and maybe a MRI.Consider a orthopedic surgeon that specializes in sports medicine for treatment of your ankle!!!

The opinion is to be physically examined by a doctor. Legs and arms sounds like it is systemic. In order to get opinions, you need to be physically examined by a person who can give you a decent diagnosis.
