I am using Weed B gone to remove weeds in the back yard and it's around my well that we obviously use for drinking. Is this safe?

Yes it is safe. We have a well and I use Weed B Gone too as a weed killer. Our well head is located in a well pit room adjacent to the house foundation however. Wells are typically 60' - 100' deep with the pump somewhere in between. Weed B Gone in the concentrations you are going to be using is going to long gone before reaching a typical underground aquifer.

Are your dogs the Bull Terrier "white cavaliers" ?? We`ve owned them for many years now , and presently have only a white and brindle ................ Great dogs/pets ! We don`t use any commercial herbicides because of our dogs , anywhere on our property . The little bit we do use is homemade , and non-toxic . It`s much cheaper , safer , and quite effective . Here`s the "recipe" : • 1 gallon of white vinegar. • 1 cup of table salt. • 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap. You can cut the ingredients in half , or even 1/4 if you don`t want to make too much at any one time . Spray only the leafy part of the weeds . Don`t spray if there`s a possibility of rain within the next 2 hours , or it`ll just be wasted .

Do NOT apply this product near your well!!! It states on the label: "Do not contaminate water used for irrigation or domestic purposes." 2,4-D is not a very environmentally friendly herbicide and can cause lots of damage to plants that are even misted with the product. Not only that, but it can contaminate ground water... YOUR drinking water, so don't do it.

I would suggest you call Ortho to find out what a safe distance is that you can apply the product from the well. Their number is: 800-225-2883.

The label is the LAW!! THey have all the application information in the label to keep you SAFE, so you apply the product the way it was intended!

Here's a link to the label:

I have to go with the vinegar solution person,, and the fact that the ground water {if you live anywhere near a farm or fields} is already contaminated a little, the ground will filter out almost all the harmful chemicals. ,, try spreading cedar mulch around the well , make sure it is a thick enough spread to cover the ground , it will kill off all the weeds and no chemicals needed. and it may improve the look of your well.

Life is far too short to test the limits of your health by attempting to slow poison your water....
Try layering cardbord on the ground it will block the weeds. Add a little mulch on top and no-one will know it's there.

Its a weed killer, you said so yourself, so it must be laden full of chemicals. Would you eat it straight from the packet, I thought not. Use straight white vinegar to kill all your weeds. You can use it near your well head and be safe with the knowledge that vinegar, even white vinegar is safe to in jest.

Depending on how deep your well casing is, it might be safe... but I would recommend placing "weed paper" around the well head instead, and covering it with decorative rock.

In my case, I built a portable shed over the well head. Gives me a place to store shovels, etc, and makes it easier to heat the well head, so the supply line doesnt freeze.

Have Fun!

I think a weed-wacker would be a smarter choice... if you wouldn't drink the stuff, why would you spray even a little bit of it around your well?

I wouldnt trust it. I think the pestacide could probably get into your water and that wouldnt be good. You should try a natural solution to kill the weads. Try pouring vinegar on the weeds. That should kill them.

You might want to try another concauction: Into a 32-oz. hand sprayer, combine one ounce gin, one ounce liquid soap and one ounce vinegar. Spray just the weeds.
