I did not know, but it does not suprise me. Baseball is considered a gentleman's sport. Look at what people wore in the stand...say...in Babe Ruth's era. They wore suits.

It's something that a gentleman and a baseballist would want to be seen wearing. Back then it was considered cool to wear a top hat.
