The birds you saw were Cockatoos. They are horrendously difficult to raise and look after. If you are thinking of getting a Cockatoo, think twice and then a dozen more times. If you want an idea about what they are all about,

They are the one of the most challenging parrots to deal with in a home environment. I do not recommend them to anyone who doesn't have huge amounts of time or a massive background in bird and behavior training. These are high energy birds, loud and they require a big space and lots of toys. There are more cockatoos given up than any other species of companion parrot.
