I learned to play by a teacher who has played 10 years prior to the time he taught me.

At the age of 14, I bought a short chord book and taugh myself chording. From there I started to play 3 chord country style songs and sing along.
I had a short time with other good pickers and learned from them and we picked and chorded and sang along together.
Most importantly, 2 things come to mind: I really has self-motivation and I had a "sense" for guitar chording. Only an individual will know if they have the determination to play regardless of the method of teaching. Good luck.

I had a friend who showed me how to play. but never really learnt any theory. Ive been playing for 13 years and am only now learning the theory side of guitar playing. playing by ear is good, but having the theory behind you helps practice, practice, practice!

i had a teacher- i had a class with a few other girls- an after school program... i did it for a year and a half, and then i quit lessons when it clashed with my little league games!! so after that i just played by myself and improved by ear... i printed tons of chords for different songs from the internet and just played... gradually i improved!!
try it- its fun!! good luck!
btw, if you need help learning chords, you can find these little maps (kinda) of how to put your fingers- you can get them on the internet, or anywhere...! :-)
