A serial number is a unique number that is one of a series assigned for identification which varies from its successor or predecessor by a fixed discrete integer value. Common usage has expanded the term to refer to any unique alphanumeric identifier for one of a large set of objects, however in data processing and allied fields in computer science. Not every numerical identifier is a serial number; identifying numbers which are not serial numbers are sometimes called nominal numbers.

A serial number is a unique number assigned by a manufacturer or publisher to a product to uniquely identify that individual item as opposed the the model number which identifies the type or edition of the product. In computer software, the serial number is not usually advanced by the simple increment of the number by one for each succeeding unit of production. This is because the serial number has acquired a secondary use as a license control mechanism. Therefore, the manufacturer uses a mathematical algorithm (equation) to determine the next number. This helps prevent the unlicensed use of their software.

On many other standard products (e.g. toasters, washers, radios, etc.) the serial number is merely advanced by one with each successive unit of production. Some serial numbers are derived by combining certain production information including but not limited to: the products completion date, place of assembly, color, style, etc. Serial numbers are used by almost all manufacturers and publishers to track warrantee information and registration.
