Isn't it someone who claims to believe in something he doesn't
really believe in? And aren't the majority of people hypocrites by
proxy? In that they are only "parroting"? Repeating what they hear?
And they never take time to discover what they are supposed to believe? Or whatever their supposed field of expertise?
So, all you "Agnostics", "Pagans", "Christians", and assorted
"Experts"! Do your HOMEWORK!
The floor is open for thoughtful, or " whiney baby" responses.

A person who claims to believe in something he doesn't really believe in isn't a hypocrite, it's just a liar- just to get your facts straight. A hypocrite is actually someone who tells others do do one thing and does the opposite himself. For example, a parent might tell his child to share his toys (genuinely believing that generosity is a good trat) but then hypocritically be ungenerous by being stingy with his money. Hypocrisy is usually something someone does without really knowing it.

The people who just repeat what they hear and don't really believe it or practice it are beyond hypocrites, becuase they simply don't think about it enough to believe what thye say they believe in. You touched on religious beliefs here, and it is certainly true that people could say they belong to a religious belief system without ever truly thinking about what they really believe in. But this is not true of all people, or nearly all- I know many truly believing Christians, Muslims, Jews, Agnostics, you name it. It's also not solely a religious thing. Many people claim to be of a certain political belief (like saying they're a Democrat) without thinking about it much either. This all ties down to the bigger problem that a lot of people don't care enough to stand up what they truly believe in. It's sad that some people are like that, but more important to remember that most people aren't, and those are the people who are going to run the world.

A hypocrite is anyone who says one thing, and then does another because a hypocrite practices the religion of "Do What I Say, Not What I Do".

For example: if someone says caffeine is evil, and you find their latté saturated bum parked at Starbucks morning, noon and night, then that someone would be a hypocrite. If someone preaches "peace", but practices sheer aggressive nastiness, that would be hypocrisy.

Someone who sends out a hundred thousand junk mails telling you to send donations to protect the Rainforest? Yep, another hypocrite— and a particularly stupid one at that as they can't see the irony of using several tree's worth of paper to tell people not to cut down trees!!

And if someone claims to love animals, and wears fur coats a'la Paris Hilton? Yep. You guessed it— they are hypocrites with a capital 'H'. Why? Because those animals came from somewhere, and they all died miserable deaths no animal lover could ever condone.

Jesus called them "Whited Sepulchers" ... A very fitting description meaning a coffin painted pristinely white on the outside, but containing rotting flesh and bones within.

So walk your talk, or don't talk at all because if you say one thing and then do the opposite, you are a hypocrite.

No its someone who purports to be something but isn't.
Ie they don't practise what they preach. I think beleif by it's self probably is usually hypocritical. We need to actually be what we say.
