Since this is for a 1st grader, I assume that you are talking about 2-dimensional shapes, like squares and triangles. In that case, this is a trick question. Every polygon has the same number of sides as it has vertices. For example, a triangle will have 3 sides and 3 vertices; and a rectangle will have 4 sides and 4 vertices.

i know a shape that has 4 vertices but only 3 sides and thats a triangular prism.
