According to a scam and quackwatch watchdog Stephen Barrett, M.D.,
"The roots of multilevel marketing are intertwined with those of the Amway Corporation and its Nutrilite product line. The Nutrilite concept is said to have originated about during the early 1930s in the mind of Carl Rehnborg, an American businessman who lived in China from 1917 to 1927." (1)
But snake-oil salesmen were popular a century before selling quasi-remedies for various ailments.(2) But they were certainly not the first.
Scams are based much in psychology and human nature. Many people want a lot for a little effort and the psychology of selling includes taking advantage of impulse buyers. It also takes advantage of other human qualities like empathy, optimism and the tendency to put emotion before logic. But there are many other traits as well that the psychology of sales can misuse.
As for modern day scams they are also based on marketing knowledge and what people want or think they want. This is obviously much easier to learn with the Internet.
Lastly, many scams are based on half-truths that make them harder to distinguish ... for instance a good number of people do well on eBay but it is a small percentage who make substantial profit. Still when people see "proof" of success they may flock to it thinking if "they" can do it, I can too. So some people may be lured into actually paying for things to sell, ignoring the cold hard facts that they are competing with too many people, often need some marketing capital to make their product stand out etc.
Scams are a form of dishonesty and that has been around since ancient times but it has really taken off since the Industrial era.
Below is a Web site on scams to help you avoid them.
Hope this helps.

What netwriter wrote for the most part is true. However, not everything out there are scams. There is no such thing as a get rich quick business. But so many people tend to forget that you really cant make money for doing nothing. You must work to bring in that substantial income.
There are some good businesses that are honest enough to tell you exactly how it works and how you must duplicate the system. If you're truly wanting to work from home and you truly want financial freedom, then you need to do your homework, do your research, check with the BBB (better business bureau). Make sure of the legitimacy, of any ill complaints and praises or ratings of a particular company you're looking at. That's what I did when I looked at http://www.bedavis1.mywayout.net/ It's a simple proven formula that shows you how it works.
Sometimes you'll make a few mistakes along the way but that's the risk of looking for that perfect something that you're wanting to do or would be happy at. And yes, a lot of people will splice up their story to make it sound even better but there are also some that are very honest and telling how it worked for them. The simple cold hard fact is, you have to be serious enough, willing enough, willing to sacrifice a little in order to get the desirements that you want.
One of the most common things that people truly fall prey to is not just the scams out there, it's themselves. Too many people unconsciously saying "I cant really do this" "I dont really have the talent" "I dont have what it takes"... or listen to people too many times telling them no no no no no and then they start allowing it to ring in their head.
One of the best sites to go to is http://www.thesecret.tv. It's a DVD you can buy that will literally change your life, change the way you think, say, do, behave, see things, hear things...everything! It focuses on your true inner thinking and hearing of your thoughts and how you can change them from negative thinking (consciously or unconsciously) to positive thinking.
Anyway, that's what I did! It works! You can watch the DVD film on your own computer too if you don't want to purchase it...it's well worth the little bit of money to go a long ways in changing your life.

Scammers prey on people who want something for nothing. Unfortunately, theres no shortage of prey, and they seem to have short memories.
