Hormones. They work in strange ways unknown to us.
The key is understanding that there is nothing you can do to alter your body's natural tendencies. The more you understand how these changes affect you and your moods, the better you can cope up with it. During those times, stay at home and don't hang out with friends if you don't feel like it. Do something relaxing --- watch a DVD, listen to music, clean the house, go for a walk . . . And if you happen to get crabby and snap at someone, apologize then realize that there is nothing wrong with you . . . it's just the hormones.

It's because of the dramatic drop in estrogen just before the period. Estrogen is a 'feel good' hormone, and when the levels drop just before a period, it can make women feel sad, angry, irritated, etc.
If your sad feelings are really impacting on your life, ask your doctor about things that might help. Lots of girls/women can lessen the feelings by taking birth control pills, for instance, as they help the hormone levels not drop so dramatically.
